Brian E. Dowd

Brian Dowd is a member of the Office of the Chairman, focusing in a part-time capacity on underwriting-related matters including oversight of the ACE Group’s product boards, the general underwriting disciplines of the company’s profit centers, outward reinsurance placements and run-off operations, as well as special strategic projects.
Prior to his retirement from full-time service in July 2011, Mr. Dowd served as Chairman of the company's Insurance – North America business segment, a position he was named to in 2006, and held the additional role of Vice Chairman, ACE Limited since 2009.
In 2005, Mr. Dowd was named Chairman of ACE USA, ACE’s U.S.-based retail operating division; Chairman of ACE Westchester, ACE’s U.S.-based wholesale focused excess and surplus property and casualty operation; and President of ACE INA Holdings, an insurance holding company that encompasses many of the organization’s U.S.-based service and support functions. Prior to those appointments, he served as Division President of ACE Westchester.
From 2001 to 2002, Mr. Dowd served as Division President, ACE Specialty P&C Group, responsible for managing Global Property, Property Engineering, Energy, Power Products, Commercial Marine, and the U.S. International businesses. Prior to this position, he served as Executive Vice President of Property for ACE USA and Senior Vice President of Property at ACE Bermuda, where he headed the Excess Property Team from 1997 to 1999.
Mr. Dowd joined ACE in 1995 from Arkwright Mutual Insurance Company, where he held increasingly responsible underwriting positions over a seven-year period.
Mr. Dowd earned a Bachelor of Science in finance from Northern Illinois University. He also holds the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) professional designation.
