Case Studies

To help you talk to your clients about the need for and benefits of EIL cover, here are some real examples of incidents from recent years:

Storage tank leaks into river

A large fuel storage tank at a logistics site failed, releasing 5,500 litres of diesel into an adjacent river. Remediation of the impacted watercourse by the Environment Agency, plus onsite contaminated soil removal by the insured, cost a total of £110,000. Their environmental risk policy responded, paying the full amount.

Dairy exceeds discharge levels

A small dairy suffered a failure in their onsite effluent treatment plant. Wastewater containing high levels of protein was released into a nearby stream, far exceeding their permitted discharge levels. A rapid response limited the clean-up costs to £25,000, which were covered under their environmental risk policy.

Chlorine leak at a hotel pool

Chlorine leaking from a container at a hotel swimming pool mixed with other detergents, creating poisonous gas. After evacuation of the pool and adjacent spa, remediation was undertaken by specialist engineers, including treatment of contaminated surfaces and removal of flooring sections.  The environmental risk policy paid out the £28,000 costs.

The examples of claims or situations on this site do not imply that similar circumstances would constitute a valid claim. Each claim is reviewed individually in accordance with the specific policy wording.
